Maus is an outstanding graphic novel by Art Speigelman. I have recently read it and it is the best graphic novel ever! My father gave this book to me as a present and I LOVE IT!!! I like this book because it tells a story that someone really experienced. It is an adventure, an intimate story, and a new world! It is a story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Polish jew who experienced the Holocaust. He was in the Polish army and he was captured by the Germans. The story is written by Vladek's son, a cartoonist, about his father's experience. In the book Art interviews his father Vladek about the Holocaust.

A Child's History of the World is an amazing book for kids. It has 73 chapters all with different stories of the world starting with pre-historic man and ending with WW1 (because it was written in 1924). As a young child my mother used to read this to me before bed. A Child's History of the World helped spark my interest in history and now history is one of my favorite things.MAPS is an amazing book for young children because it teaches them about what is in every country. For example if you look at Croatia you will see illustrations of traditional folk costumes, the animals that live there, the crops they grow, the food they eat, and what people like to do there. I like this book because it shows all the national flags and major landmarks of every nation. When I was four my mother brought this book for me and it made my passion for geography skyrocket. This book is one of the most fun and informative books in the world!
Prisoners of Geography explains what is going on in the world in terms of Geopolitics, more specifically Russia, China, USA, Western Europe, Africa, The Middle East, The Indian Subcontinent, The Koreas and Japan, Latin America, and The Arctic. Something I found interesting was that the Russians are claiming parts of the Arctic because they want to expand their influence. The book also gives lots of cool facts including that half of Europe relies on Russia's oil. Global Warming is a big part of this book and geopolitics because it will make land that was previously uninhabitable including Greenland and Antarctica habitable Global warming will flood 90% of the Pacific Islands, Florida, NYC, LA, San Francisco, Houston, Mumbai, Bangladesh, Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Shanghai, Lisbon, Reykjavik, Nuuk, Seattle, Vancouver, and many more places.
Jared Diamond is a biologist who studies birds in Papua New Guinea. One day he was going on a walk with Yali, a local politician and Yali asked him "Why you white people have so much goods and we New Guineans have so little?". Diamond didn't know at the time. He decided to go back to before inequality began. He started researching farming to see where and when it began. It turns out there was a small village in Jordan around 10,000 years ago. Around 2,000 years later there was a drought in the Middle East and almost all the crops were wiped out.
The people of the Middle East had to leave. Luckily for them areas around them had related crops. Examples of these areas are India, China, Egypt, and Greece. Sound similar? Thats right, the four most advanced ancient civilizations. Because of these supplies these regions flourished. But Europe was the continent that ended up colonizing the world. Why? Well the Europeans had more conflicts between each other so they had to stay ahead of their neighbors with military, economy, and technology. (Like Genoa and Venice fighting over trade routes.) These The Story of the World CD's are by Jim Weiss and they taught me many things about history. They start by explaining early nomadic tribes and end in the present. They were one of the things that got me interested in History. I would listen to them in the car when I drove places with my mother.
Volume 1 includes the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the first Olympics (back before they added Ping-Pong), and the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. In Volume 2 covers Vikings, prophets, outlaws, Samurai, reformers, and explorers, during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Volume 3 will teach you about the American Revolution, the Pilgrims, the settling of Australia, and the emperor of China. The last volume contains Thomas Edison, Martin Luther King, the suffragettes, Indira Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela. This is a five book series about History.
They are fun comics packed full with jokes. I liked this series because it taught me more about history and it made me laugh. The first book starts at the beginning of time and ends with the Macedonians. The second book ends with the fall of Rome. The third ends with Christopher Columbus. The forth ends with the Constitution. The fifth ends in present day. I personally think that this series is great for children who like history. |
